RACHEL

The seven Chinese takeout containers lie open on my counter, and I stare down at my empty plate, smeared with various remnants of the deliciousness now sitting like lead in my stomach. I ordered way too much food, as always. But Flynn usually eats with me, and I've gotten used to having a little bit of everything. So even though he's working late tonight, I ordered all his favorites, too.

I climb from my stool with a groan and trudge over to the window to look out toward his still, dark house. Unless I missed him coming home, he’s still at the office at almost nine o'clock at night. That's kind of unusual for him.

Even though he cleans up well and looks good in suits, they’re definitely not his favorite attire. He’d much rather be home in a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt than in a tie strangling his throat.

I grab my phone and shoot him a text. Hey, are you home? I have extra Chinese. Your favorites.

The three little dots I normally see within a few seconds of contacting him don’t appear. That's strange. Unless he's in a meeting or talking to a client, Flynn usually responds almost immediately, and I doubt he has meetings or client calls this late.

I hope everything is okay.

Worry unsettles the massive amount of food sitting in my stomach. I press my hand against my abdomen to calm it and fire off another text.

I'm gonna leave it in my fridge. Come on in and get it when you get home if you want to. I'm going to hit the sack early tonight.

Why are you worrying, Rach? He’s an adult.

I close all the containers and place them into the fridge. More than likely, absolutely nothing is wrong, but it doesn’t stop me from sending another text, this one to Aubrey.

Have either of you heard from Flynn tonight?

Aubrey replies almost instantly. No, why? Is he missing or something?

Crap, now I’m worrying her for no reason.

No, he told me he was working late tonight. He just isn’t replying to my text.

Maybe he’s on a date?

Oh, God.

That hadn’t even crossed my mind. But the weird way he acted during our little tiff not so long ago coupled with this suggests I might be right about there being a secret girl.

Don’t you think he would tell me if he were on a date?

The thought that he might not makes me wish I hadn’t eaten so much. It feels an awful lot like jealousy creeping up my esophagus—mixed with fried rice, crab Rangoon, sweet and sour chicken, and everything else I wolfed down.

But that can’t be it.

I’ve never been jealous of Flynn dating, though it has been a while since he’s seen anyone. That’s just not our thing, though. We’re happy for each other when the other has someone in their life. We don’t do jealous and petty.

So, it can’t be that.

The Chinese isn’t sitting well. That’s the story I’m going with.

My phone rings in my hand, and Aubrey’s name flashes on the screen.
